Celebrating Matthew’s birthday with my first portrait of 2016

Dear Art Blog Friends

Our first born son, Matthew is 24 years young tomorrow. Every year since we were blessed with his presence, I have always produced a personalised birthday card for him and his younger siblings, Aidan and Natalie.

It means so much for me to be able to reflect on their achievements, favourite cartoon characters, including popular TV children themes that they were into and we’ve always saved a bob or two on our annual greetings card budget!

Tomorrow’s card is special. On the surface, it may appear to be a simple portrait of a young man with the determination to succeed as an RE Teacher – sorry, Matthew, I heard via Facebook and social media that you’re not very keen on this particular pose, so I chose to change it slightly. I think everyone will agree that the 33cm x 24cm image, proudly rendered in the Derwent “Drawing” range on smooth white Bristol board is a true likeness, certainly all your family, friends, colleagues and most importantly your new wife, Hannah will vouch for this!

Simplicity is key to this portrait: you have outgrown those favourite cartoons and the popular themes come and go, but always remember your roots. Think about your old mum and dad, your brother and sister, uncle Stephen, Nana and Grandad – even though you’re making a new life for yourself with gorgeous Hannah in Southsea, some 270 miles south of the family homestead!

Quite simply, I give you….. OUR Matthew! Many Happy Returns son. Love mum.

Best Wishes
